22 Aug Devizes Carnival Confetti Battle
A short film made by Devizes skateboarders will be shown as part of this year’s Devizes Carnival confetti battle.
A large screen will be erected in the centre of the Market Place so that the five-minute film entitled Welcome to the Dark Slide can be shown.
The skaters themselves will give a demonstration of their skill on a temporary ramp erected in front of the screen.
The film was made with some of the £10,000 granted to the carnival by the Big Lottery Awards for All fund.
The carnival’s artistic director, Dave Buxton, said: “To many people skaters, as they prefer to be called, are a bit of a nuisance, but skateboarding is a recognised sport and they simply don’t have anywhere to practise in the local area.
“We gave them a camera and they toured the skateboard parks of the county, showing what is on offer and what kind of skills they and their friends have got.
“I think people are going to be genuinely amazed to see how talented these people are.”
The local skaters teamed up with Rubicon Skateboards to produce the movie, which was edited, dubbed and completed with professional help.
Confetti Battle night on Wednesday has been a firm favourite with carnival goers for many years.
This Saturday, the local neighbourhood policing team is holding its Bluez n Zuz special party in Hillworth Park with live bands and DJ and a smoke and laser show.
On Sunday, Devizes Beer Race sets off from the Artichoke at 1pm. Teams of four compete by carrying a barrel around the town, stopping off at eight pubs along the way to down a swift half pint.
A new attraction on the carnival programme this year is the Comedy Night in the basement of the Corn Exchange on Thursday August 28 and tickets are already selling well. Comedians Tommy Campbell and Sally-Anne Hayward will be coming to town directly from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
