Worthing Contest

Youngsters got on their bikes – and boards – during a competition day at Worthing’s skatepark.
The event took place on Friday, August 28, when dozens of skateboarders and BMX bikers showed off their top tricks to win a variety of prizes.

Competitions were open in two age categories – over and under 16 – and winners got their hands on such treats as new skateboard decks, t-shirts and iTunes vouchers.

The competitions were judged and announced by staff from Rubicon Skate School.

Giles Sawyer, from the skate school, said the standard was very high and praised the competitors, aged between 12 and 25 years old.

Julian Stevens, leisure development manager for Worthing Council, said the skills on display were breathtaking.

He said: “We are celebrating the skills and abilities of the skateboarders and BMX riders of Worthing.

“It’s all about stunts and how clever the people are on their various bikes or skateboards.

“They’ve done fantastically well. Their skills are awesome. It takes my breath away.”

Worthing rappers Lil Chris and MC Bizzy performed at the event and said more like it should take place, something which they felt could reduce “youth problems” in the town
